MOUSE

MATT LANDIS

Indie / Ambient / Pop

alone with my thoughts in a Paris squat

Matthew Landis is a Philadelphia area singer, keyboardist and songwriter. He is currently in the process of spending a large amount of money that he probably can’t afford to spend in order to record his debut EP (all the burned CD’s he’s been giving out for years don’t count apparently). He has been performing mostly in the Philadelphia area for several years. He was named stand out performer for March 2006 at the Philly Rising Open Mic Competition at World Cafe Live and subsequently performed at the World Cafe Live Downstairs as part of CREAM: The Best of Philly Rising in January 2007. Matthew has shared the stage with the likes of Erik Petersen (of Mischief Brew fame), Hezekiah Jones, The Spinning Leaves, Emilyn Brodsky, Disciples of Groove, The Blue Method, and more. He has performed as a sideman playing keyboards for Philadelphia area artists Joshua Park (including providing keyboards for his current ep, “One Wish” recorded at Turtle Studios in Philadelphia), Dawn Iulg, Bosco and Peck. He is also one of the keyboard players for national (and international) touring act and Chunksaah Records artist the World/Inferno Friendship Society, having toured Europe and the Northeast with them. “Although missing the familiar handlebar mustache of Franz Nicolay, the group sufficiently compensated with newcomer Matt Landis, a menace at the keyboard.” (source: http://www.theway903.com/blog/?p=32) In closing, Matthew believes in the proposition that art should never be boring and complacent and that it should, in fact, be good. He also believes that most art fails to live up to these standards. This has led many to accuse him of being cynical or arrogant. While his detractors may be right, Matthew believes that all in all, he’s a pretty nice guy.

KELSEY BULKIN

Folk Rock / Healing & EasyListening

CHRISTOPHER BOHN

folk rock / indie / roots music

Christopher has been making music since his adolescence. A young fascination with punk rock and grunge propelled him onto the stage at 15 with his bands Fanboys and Side Project. His taste for punk rock was quickly overtaken by a love and resonance with jazz (particularly the deep spirituality of John Coltrane), modern classical music (such as Philip Glass and Stravinsky), and the experimental rock of Radiohead. Over the years, the melodies and simple chords of folk music have threaded their way through his songs. All of these influences have been wrapped up into a modern Americana. In addition to being a singer-songwriter, Christopher also performs and composes instrumental fingerstyle guitar music, drawing from the worlds of classical guitar and American folk music. Christopher is also co-director of the St. Francis University Universe of Song, where he teaches songwriting. www.universeofsong.com

AUSTIN LUCAS

Americana / Country

Austin Lucas, descendant of a family from Indiana to whom making bluegrass and folk music comes as natural as breathing, escapes his environment by throwing himself on punk and hardcore music. Participation in a row of obscure bands leads him to the Czech republic in the end. He performs solo and plays in the Orc-core group Guided Cradle. To everyone’s surprise he arrives at the family’s gate with the announcement that he wants to record a cd. The furniture of the living room is pushed aside and exchanged for a tangle of amplifiers, boxes, microphones and miles of cables. Father Bob is a complete band by himself and sets himself behind the mixing table. playing banjo, violin, ukelele, guitar and sings in the background. His sister Chloe Manor sings a few duets with Austin and quadruped Flicka growls and rhythmically scratches the itching spots on her body. Surely the lyrics Austin wrote for the eight songs do itch as well. The carefully cultivated crust of our society is blown to smithers with the stroke of a sledge hammer. Like an americana punk variation on Kafka alienation and general collapse of modern mankind are put into strong lyrics, and all of this in a voice that tears open the earth. Between the opening chorus My breath is a hammer/ My insides are taxed like an anvil/ My heartbeat’s a tremor/ And I have not love but for nicotine and the closing verse I was cursing the flaws of my ignorance and youth a textual and musical zenith in light music unfolds in our still so young century. -koos gijsman, heaven magazine

SPIRIT AND DUST

Folk / Lyrical / Jungle

Arkansas

“Spirit and Dust are intrepid tourers of the 50 states, a hardy band of minstrels that conquer boredom in audiences with a musical outreach that could very easily be just the thing that the Obama team needs to get America in shape: it’s a musical stimulus plan! This all may sound like hyperbole. However, when you consider that the leader of the band, Kristen Sylvester, is only 19, and has the “old sorrow” in her voice of the most traveled box-car crooner, you get an injection of hope that her band’s kind of earnestness in songwriting is what will carry Philadelphia into its own, alongside Nashville, Seattle, etc…”

THE CHAIRS

Rock / Indie / Experimental

The Chairs play eclectic, slightly funky, songs that are each packed with multiple musical ideas and which display an acknowledged debt to the Elephant 6 Collective and their massive cabinet of ‘60’s and ‘70’s obsessions. There are so many ideas and hooks within these songs that had they all been properly stretched out and explored, Laugh, It’s A Fright could have been a triple album. But all these ideas, as compressed and layered as they are, instead give this album a dense and layered effect which makes it a joy to pick through upon (many) repeated listens. —Radio Exile (5/12/09)

CHAIRMAN DANCES

Rock

Sylvia Tell, ballet Bain News Service/George Grantham Bain Collection (Library of Congress)

The Lives of Those Misplaced is the first album by The Chairman Dances. Written and recorded rather quickly, its songs are built around live performances. There are very few overdubs, and you’ll be able to hear when they are present. The thread that holds these songs together as a unit is explained, simply, by the album’s title. Steve Reich (c.1968) writes, “What I’m interested in is a compositional process and a sounding music that are one and the same thing…I don’t know any secrets of structure that you can’t hear…[e]ven when all the cards are on the table and everyone hears what is gradually happening in a musical process, there are still enough mysteries to satisfy all.”

HANNA MILLER

SONNI SHINE

Acoustic / Folk Rock / Reggae

The Stone Pony, last march

Hello there, this is Sonni. She is a writer, performer, and musician working and living in the center of Philadelphia and on the coast of the Jersey Shore. She has been performing live shows for a little over 4 years, in venues of all shapes and sizes. She goes to Drexel University, where she is currently in the process of changing her major, more disgruntled with “the music business” and more content just playing music. Mainly she spends time writing and playing in reggae-punk band Infinite Detour, and has been doing so for about three years. On the side, she is a singer-songwriter. Here are her songs, heavily influenced by the ideals and styles of old school punk and early roots reggae, and inspired by the truthful simplicity and “raw” storytelling of folk music. She has released one record, “Free” on her own, made in 2006, and is about to release another 10-song collection independently in April of 2009, entitled “Underwater Sounds.” Also to follow are a new release from Infinite Detour, entitled “…On We Go,” following 2007’s “Pterodactyl Knife Fight.” Look for these soon at their shows.

THE BREAK MISSION

The Break Mission is a Brooklyn trio showcasing a unique talent for impassioned storytelling and lilting dynamics, much like their revered contemporaries Elbow, Death Cab for Cutie and Doves. Critics and fans alike have described the band as sublime, anthemic and refreshing.
Some highlights over the years include showcasing at CMJ, NEMO, 2NMC, Dewey Beach Pop Fest and the International Pop Overthrow. The group performed at Boston’s WBCN Rock N Roll Rumble, WFNX New England Product Series and CN8’s Backstage with Barry Nolan. The band has been featured in SPIN magazine, performed with artists like Duncan Sheik, The Push Stars and Matisyahu, and contributed songs to various compilations including Starbuck’s Music, sold in stores nationwide.

CHRIS BRUNI

Folk / Pop / Soul

An E Chord looks better in black and white, does it not?

Following the release of his critically acclaimed 2007 debut release “Watch Me Burn”, singer/songwriter Chris Bruni is out on his own this time around with his sophomore release, “I’ve Been Here”, a fully fan-funded album. With the confidence provided by the success of his first effort, Chris decided to take more control of his career as an emerging artist and release this new collection of songs using a complete DIY approach. After two years of heavy touring and an obvious connection with a newfound fanbase, Chris found himself with the need for new music. Along with the freedom that came from the departure with his previuos label, Chris was also posed with the dilemma of financing a professionally produced album and releasing it completely on his own. It was at this time that he chose to take a path that many independent artists are taking in the changing face of the collapsing music industry. He decided to turn to the support of his devoted new fans to help him reach his goal in releasing the new music he had been working so hard to perfect. “At first it was just an idea that I thought may generate a small level of interest from the people who had taken an interest in what I was doing. I wanted to keep them involved even though I wasn’t really sure what direction my career was going to take.” says Chris.
