SAVE THE 941 THEATER!!
The 941 Theater is a multi-use independent theater space, hosting movie screenings, live music, theater performances, art shows and much more. This is the first indie theater of this type to open in Philly in over 10 years; there are not many places in Philadelphia like this let alone the entire country. The 941 Theater provides access for the people of Philadelphia to a broader variety of films by programming films that are not available here because there is no venue for them. Additionally, the 941 Theater provides an intimate, personal venue for fans to see their favorite bands in an environment they would not normally experience. If the 941 Theater closes, it’s not likely that another space of its type with take its place.
Bands who have performed at 941 include The Dickies, The Angry Samoans, The Phenomenauts, The AKA’s, Digable Planets, Black Landlord, ZO2, Dr. Fameus of the Disco Biscuits, Pilfers, Bellameurte, The Old Souls and much more.
Screenings and events include Flight of the Conchords, Bam Margera, Bjork, Bill Plympton, Lamb of God, Adam Rifkin, Ron Jeremy, Martin Atkins and Invisible Records, the Found Footage Festival, Raspberry Brothers, Animation Block Party, Backseat Film Festival, Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Zoo York, and much more

Dear Friends and Patrons of the 941 Theater,
We regret to inform you that The 941 Theater is in imminent danger of closing down forever. As you may know, we’ve worked hard to support the art, film and music communities in Philadelphia by creating a safe and accessible venue everyone can enjoy. In the process of trying to keep our prices low and the venue friendly to emerging artists and filmmakers, we have found ourselves in a financial situation where our overhead has become much greater than our profits. In the process, important paperwork and licenses have lapsed and we are being forced to shut our doors for the month of November. Due to our dire financial situation, every day our doors are closed we lose the important money that needs to go back into the theater. We are currently working on a huge fundraiser which needs to happen before the end of November in order for us to gain the funds to help re-open the theater. If you are willing to donate your time and efforts to help save the 941 Theater, please contact us at BOOKING@941theater.com. We know times are tough for everyone, but if you are willing to make a monetary donation, every little bit helps and would be greatly appreciated.
If you can donate money to the cause, you can do so here:

MIDWIVES COLLECTIVE SHOW-EL VIAJE
On Friday, November 13, 2009 The Midwives Collective & Gallery will host the opening for “El Viaje” (The Journey) located at 1241 Carpenter Street in beloved South Philadelphia from 6 P.M till 10 P.M. The Gallery will be open Saturdays from 12 P.M. till 5 P.M. or by appointment only (in which, contact themwc@gmail.com. There is no admission fee to enjoy this show. We hope to see you there!
“EL Viaje” (The Journey) brought together the emerging Mexican community in South Philadelphia to give them a voice to tell their stories. These women, men, and children communicated their similar struggles, sacrifices, triumphs, and realities as immigrants making the journey to the United States. Through open dialogue, writings, paintings, printmaking, and video, these manifestos capture the many pressing issues relating to assimilation, maintaining identity and culture of origin, and the search for opportunity. The shared hopes of “El Viaje” and its participants is the awareness in Philadelphia of the real struggles of this rising immigrant community as well as to give them the voice and a space to tell their stories.
During August, an open invitation was extended to Mexican families of South Philadelphia to simply share their struggles and accomplishments and connect with each other through conversation. They participated in a 10-12 art workshop series sponsored by the Leeway Foundation and conducted by lead artist Nora Hiriart Litz along with a team of artists in her studio space (Midwives Gallery). The outcome of the workshop are artworks created by entire families that will one day be artifacts for these families as they continue to put roots down and settle. In addition, “El Viaje” (The Journey) was documented and contains the authentic experiences as told by these families on video, which can be viewed at the opening.
Biography- Nora Hiriart Litz
Nora Hiriart Litz is a visual artist/printmaker that lives and works in South Philadelphia. Her relationship with the Mexican community is intimate and continuous. She identifies with the Mexican community here not just by cultural origin but they share the similar position of being strangers in this land. She shares with them the communication problems and cultural barriers experienced by this community. Who she is plays an important role in El Viaje project because she can connect to the community as a Mexican, a woman, a mother and an immigrant placed in the same emotional position as these new immigrant families. This experience gives her the perspective of knowing what can be gained and lost through the cultural divide that immigration generates.

Sun Ra Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen
Join us for this special and spectacular Halloween performance of the Sun Ra Arkestra. Founded in 1958 under the leadership of Sun Ra, the Arkestra pioneered a unique brand of afro-futurism, forging intersecting musical pathways that explore outer space and Egyptian mythology. Drawing on the work of Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson, the Arkestra are pioneers of the bop-derived avant-garde and collective improvisation. Their work has had tremendous impact on scores of musicians including MC5, Sonic Youth and George Clinton. Following the Arkestra’s influential tenures in Chicago and New York City, Sun Ra and the Arkestra relocated to Philadelphia in 1968, where they continue their commitment to the study, research and development of Sun Ra’s musical precepts. Following the ascension of Sun Ra in 1993 and John Gilmore in 1995, Maestro Marshall Allen (b. 1924) has launched the Sun Ra Arkestra into a dimension beyond that of mere “ghost” band by writing fresh arrangements of Sun Ra’s music, as well as composing new music and arrangements for the Arkestra.

FLicKeR
dir. Nik Sheehan, Canada, 2008, video, 72 mins, color & b/w
Created by poet, artist, calligrapher and mystic Brion Gysin in 1961, The Dream Machine looks simple enough – a 100-watt light bulb, a motor and a rotating cylinder with cutouts. But Gysin believed The Dream Machine would offer a drugless high that would revolutionize human consciousness. Users just in front of it, close their eyes, and wait for the visions to come. With a custom-made Dream Machine in tow, director Sheehan takes us on a journey into the life of Gysin – his art, complex ideas and friendships with some of the 20th century’s key counterculture figures.
Featuring writer and Dream Machine enthusiast William S Burroughs, singer Marianne Faithfull, singer/artist Genesis P-Orridge, punk rocker Iggy Pop, filmmaker Kenneth Anger and artist/turntablist DJ Spooky, FLicKeR is a truly hypnotic documentary that asks crucial questions about the nature of art and consciousness and imagines a humanity liberated to explore its creativity in complete freedom.
Free admission members above Internationalist level;
$5 Internationalists; $6 students + seniors; $8 general admission.
In advance at TICKETWEB.COM or 1/2 hour before showtime at The Ibrahim Theater Box Office.

Lie with a straight face. That’s how you get away with posing as a top executive,

Brainstorm with them about how to effect change right here and now after watching how they do it in “The Yes Men Fix the World.”

Jacobs writes memoir — hilarious stories about unusual “experiments in living” that he undertakes. Rachel Simon takes on big personal challenges, then writes about what they teach her about life. Yagoda leads a conversation with the three authors, who will read excerpts from their recent releases, discuss their approaches to writing memoir, and talk about why and how they do what they do.
A.J. Jacobs is the New York Times bestselling author of The Know-It-All and The Year of Living Biblically.
Ben Yagoda has been an editor/writer at New Jersey Monthly and Philadelphia Magazine, movie critic at the Philadelphia Daily News, and has written for Slate and Esquire.

Sadia Shepard, daughter of a Christian/American father and Muslim/Pakistani mother, understood the complexities of a multi-cultural household. What made her melting pot overflow was the discovery that her grandmother had been born Jewish. Compelled to reclaim her roots, she travelled to India to discover the history of the Jews of India, believed to be descendents of the lost tribes of Israel. She brings this journey to life in her memoir The Girl from Foreign and her film In Search of the Bene Israel, which she presents at the festival. Music by the Lenny Seidman Tabla Choir and a buffet by Ekta Indian Restaurant evoke the tastes and sounds of her unusual history.

This program has been approved for two hours of ethics credit for Pennsylvania lawyers. Credits may be available in other jurisdictions as well. Attorneys seeking CLE credit should bring a check in the amount of $25, payable to the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, to the event.

Patrick Johnson gives voice to a group that has been politely concealed: gay, black men born, raised, and living in the South. Just the Two of Us. Ain’t No Sunshine. Lean on Me. The man who wrote the songs that defined a decade walked away from showbiz without a look back. For 23 years, Bill Withers shunned the spotlight and refused all interviews — until filmmakers Damani Baker and Alex Vlack convinced him to tell his surprising story. Still Bill gives us an inside look at Bill Withers’ life and personality, tells why he stopped performing at the peak of his career and who he is today. An amazing portrait of an icon who never gave up his soul. The evening concludes with a live concert of Withers’ classics by the legendary Johnny Ingram of the Funk Brothers, and his band.

“Jim didn’t think in terms of boundaries at all the way the rest of us do. There are always these fences we build around ourselves and our ideas. Jim seemed to have no fences.”
—Jon Stone, Sesame Street producer and director
Without “fences” to limit where his imagination could roam, Jim Henson (1936-1990)—artist, puppeteer, film director and producer—created elaborate imaginary worlds filled with unique characters, objects, environments and even languages and cultures. Jim Henson’s Fantastic World, an exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) and the Jim Henson Legacy, offers a rare peek into the imagination and creative genius of this multitalented innovator and creator of Kermit the Frog, Big Bird and other beloved characters.
Jim Henson’s Fantastic World is the inaugural show in the Della Penna-Fernberger | Paton | Smith Galleries, the new exhibition space that is the center-piece of the Museum’s $12 million expansion.
This exhibition features 100 original artworks, including drawings, cartoons and storyboards that illustrate Henson’s talent as a storyteller and visionary. Among the variety of exhibition objects are puppets and television and movie props, photographs of Henson and his collaborators at work and original video productions, including excerpts from Henson’s early career and experimental films. The exhibition installation will include a resource room, which will feature hands-on activities for children of all ages, including a puppet theater.
“It’s such a treat to get to know Jim Henson through his doodles and drawings, his puppets and his fantastic performances,” said Karen Falk, curator of the exhibition and archivist at The Jim Henson Company. “I’m delighted to be able to share this inspiring and entertaining experience with people all over the country. Seeing his original work firsthand opens a window into his visual thinking and provides both an appreciation of Jim as an artist and a reason to laugh out loud.”
From the very beginning, Henson expressed his ideas with incredible bursts of invention, through a variety of visual forms, clever dialogue, songs, comic bits and animation. All of his work reveals a highly sophisticated and nuanced thought process, evident in the decades-long metamorphosis of a small group of captivating characters from simple doodles to cartoons to puppets to films. What began as a one-man enterprise eventually grew into an international phenomenon. As time passed, the simple hand puppets that Henson created for his first television show, “Sam and Friends,” evolved into increasingly more sophisticated characters—from the Muppets of “The Muppet Show,” “Sesame Street” and “Fraggle Rock” fame to the larger-than-life fantasy creatures of “The Dark Crystal” and “Labyrinth”.
Jim Henson’s Fantastic World is organized by The Jim Henson Legacy and SITES, in cooperation with the Henson Family; The Jim Henson Company; The Muppets Studio, LLC; and Sesame Workshop. The exhibition is made possible by The Biography Channel. Additional support has been provided The Jane Henson Foundation and Cheryl Henson.
