SAVE THE 941 THEATER!!

The 941 Theater is a multi-use independent theater space, hosting movie screenings, live music, theater performances, art shows and much more. This is the first indie theater of this type to open in Philly in over 10 years; there are not many places in Philadelphia like this let alone the entire country. The 941 Theater provides access for the people of Philadelphia to a broader variety of films by programming films that are not available here because there is no venue for them. Additionally, the 941 Theater provides an intimate, personal venue for fans to see their favorite bands in an environment they would not normally experience. If the 941 Theater closes, it’s not likely that another space of its type with take its place. Bands who have performed at 941 include The Dickies, The Angry Samoans, The Phenomenauts, The AKA’s, Digable Planets, Black Landlord, ZO2, Dr. Fameus of the Disco Biscuits, Pilfers, Bellameurte, The Old Souls and much more. Screenings and events include Flight of the Conchords, Bam Margera, Bjork, Bill Plympton, Lamb of God, Adam Rifkin, Ron Jeremy, Martin Atkins and Invisible Records, the Found Footage Festival, Raspberry Brothers, Animation Block Party, Backseat Film Festival, Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Zoo York, and much more

“Best New Venue” 2009 Best of Philly – Philadelphia Magazine
2009 City Paper Choice Award Winner – “The Screen Savers”

“The 941 guys are the future for celebrating cult cinema and truly indie filmmakers.”
Scott Johnston – Philadelphia Film Festival

“A home at last for local directors and their films” - Philadelphia Inquirer

Dear Friends and Patrons of the 941 Theater,

We regret to inform you that The 941 Theater is in imminent danger of closing down forever. As you may know, we’ve worked hard to support the art, film and music communities in Philadelphia by creating a safe and accessible venue everyone can enjoy. In the process of trying to keep our prices low and the venue friendly to emerging artists and filmmakers, we have found ourselves in a financial situation where our overhead has become much greater than our profits. In the process, important paperwork and licenses have lapsed and we are being forced to shut our doors for the month of November. Due to our dire financial situation, every day our doors are closed we lose the important money that needs to go back into the theater. We are currently working on a huge fundraiser which needs to happen before the end of November in order for us to gain the funds to help re-open the theater. If you are willing to donate your time and efforts to help save the 941 Theater, please contact us at BOOKING@941theater.com. We know times are tough for everyone, but if you are willing to make a monetary donation, every little bit helps and would be greatly appreciated.

If you can donate money to the cause, you can do so here:

A complete schedule of on-air events and programming lineup will be available on the WPRB Blog on Wednesday, September 30th, 2009.

Listeners can make a pledge of ten dollars or more and receive an exclusive membership premium from WPRB. As with previous drives, local and international artists donate designs to feature on magnets, bumper stickers, T-shirts, hooded sweatshirts, and bags.

The premium items designed exclusively for the 2009 Membership Drive were provided by Ana Benaroya (NJ), Jennifer Cooke (MA), Keith Greiman (PA), Sohrab Habibon (NYC), Hawk Krall (PA), Dr. Pizzoli (PA), and Mathieu Trudel (Montreal, Canada).
In addition to the above premiums, the station offers limited-edition premiums during specific programs. These include autographed copies of albums, CD/LP box sets, DVDs, gift certificates to local restaurants and retailers, and more. These special premiums are exclusive to listeners pledging by telephone during the drive. Renowned independent record labels such as Sub Pop, Matador, Merge, Polyvinyl and more have donated select releases from their catalogs to help WPRB raise funds. MIDWIVES COLLECTIVE SHOW-EL VIAJE

On Friday, November 13, 2009 The Midwives Collective & Gallery will host the opening for “El Viaje” (The Journey) located at 1241 Carpenter Street in beloved South Philadelphia from 6 P.M till 10 P.M. The Gallery will be open Saturdays from 12 P.M. till 5 P.M. or by appointment only (in which, contact themwc@gmail.com. There is no admission fee to enjoy this show. We hope to see you there! “EL Viaje” (The Journey) brought together the emerging Mexican community in South Philadelphia to give them a voice to tell their stories. These women, men, and children communicated their similar struggles, sacrifices, triumphs, and realities as immigrants making the journey to the United States. Through open dialogue, writings, paintings, printmaking, and video, these manifestos capture the many pressing issues relating to assimilation, maintaining identity and culture of origin, and the search for opportunity. The shared hopes of “El Viaje” and its participants is the awareness in Philadelphia of the real struggles of this rising immigrant community as well as to give them the voice and a space to tell their stories. During August, an open invitation was extended to Mexican families of South Philadelphia to simply share their struggles and accomplishments and connect with each other through conversation. They participated in a 10-12 art workshop series sponsored by the Leeway Foundation and conducted by lead artist Nora Hiriart Litz along with a team of artists in her studio space (Midwives Gallery). The outcome of the workshop are artworks created by entire families that will one day be artifacts for these families as they continue to put roots down and settle. In addition, “El Viaje” (The Journey) was documented and contains the authentic experiences as told by these families on video, which can be viewed at the opening.

Biography- Nora Hiriart Litz
Nora Hiriart Litz is a visual artist/printmaker that lives and works in South Philadelphia. Her relationship with the Mexican community is intimate and continuous. She identifies with the Mexican community here not just by cultural origin but they share the similar position of being strangers in this land. She shares with them the communication problems and cultural barriers experienced by this community. Who she is plays an important role in El Viaje project because she can connect to the community as a Mexican, a woman, a mother and an immigrant placed in the same emotional position as these new immigrant families. This experience gives her the perspective of knowing what can be gained and lost through the cultural divide that immigration generates.

Sun Ra Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen

Join us for this special and spectacular Halloween performance of the Sun Ra Arkestra. Founded in 1958 under the leadership of Sun Ra, the Arkestra pioneered a unique brand of afro-futurism, forging intersecting musical pathways that explore outer space and Egyptian mythology. Drawing on the work of Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson, the Arkestra are pioneers of the bop-derived avant-garde and collective improvisation. Their work has had tremendous impact on scores of musicians including MC5, Sonic Youth and George Clinton. Following the Arkestra’s influential tenures in Chicago and New York City, Sun Ra and the Arkestra relocated to Philadelphia in 1968, where they continue their commitment to the study, research and development of Sun Ra’s musical precepts. Following the ascension of Sun Ra in 1993 and John Gilmore in 1995, Maestro Marshall Allen (b. 1924) has launched the Sun Ra Arkestra into a dimension beyond that of mere “ghost” band by writing fresh arrangements of Sun Ra’s music, as well as composing new music and arrangements for the Arkestra.

FLICKERbr> Wednesday, November 4, 2009

Ibrahim Theater @ International House
3701 Chestnut St.
Wednesday, November 4 at 7pm

FLicKeR

dir. Nik Sheehan, Canada, 2008, video, 72 mins, color & b/w

Created by poet, artist, calligrapher and mystic Brion Gysin in 1961, The Dream Machine looks simple enough – a 100-watt light bulb, a motor and a rotating cylinder with cutouts. But Gysin believed The Dream Machine would offer a drugless high that would revolutionize human consciousness. Users just in front of it, close their eyes, and wait for the visions to come. With a custom-made Dream Machine in tow, director Sheehan takes us on a journey into the life of Gysin – his art, complex ideas and friendships with some of the 20th century’s key counterculture figures.
Featuring writer and Dream Machine enthusiast William S Burroughs, singer Marianne Faithfull, singer/artist Genesis P-Orridge, punk rocker Iggy Pop, filmmaker Kenneth Anger and artist/turntablist DJ Spooky, FLicKeR is a truly hypnotic documentary that asks crucial questions about the nature of art and consciousness and imagines a humanity liberated to explore its creativity in complete freedom.

Free admission members above Internationalist level;
$5 Internationalists; $6 students + seniors; $8 general admission.

In advance at TICKETWEB.COM or 1/2 hour before showtime at The Ibrahim Theater Box Office.

NE Corner, 13th & Pine

The entry fee is $5 per work, with the jury awarding up to $500 in prizes. The jury is also responsible for deciding at which gallery selected work will be exhibited.

WHO WE ARE:
Off the Wall Gallery is one of Philadelphia’s first non-traditional art spaces. Our formal founding year is 1978 but our roots date back to the 1940s when Dirty Frank’s began inviting local art students to hang their work. The gallery embraces emerging artists, avant-garde forms, strong personal and political perspectives, and fresh ideas.

The Midwives Collective & Gallery is a 21st-century women’s collective formed for the purpose of fostering community art making, culture and the creation of art history by maintaining a public arena for the display and practice of innovative, emerging art.

FIRST PERSON ARTS FEST (Nov 3-8)
http://www.firstpersonarts.org/programs2/2009-festival/
YES MEN
How to Fix the World - Thursday, November 5
8:30-10:30 pm
Screening and Q&A (Philadelphia premiere)
In advance: $12 (First Person Arts members) / $15 (general public) - $15/$20 after
10/25
Lie with a straight face. That’s how you get away with posing as a top executive,
manipulating the media, and fabricating announcements to force corporations to correct misdeeds, say the Yes Men. Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno (aka the Yes Men) are as irreverent about the stunts they pull as they are earnest about righting cultural wrongs. Brainstorm with them about how to effect change right here and now after watching how they do it in “The Yes Men Fix the World.”

Shelter Opening Reception -
Friday, November 6
5-7 pm
FREE
Reception, exhibition, presentation
Meet the artists and families who collaborated to create Shelter after Rebuilding Together Philadelphia helped the families restore their homes. The artists documented the stories of the lives within those walls while also reflecting upon what “shelter” means to them personally.
Artist Damon Reaves will perform a new work that combines audio and physical action. The performance and his drawings reflect conversations about race and identity resulting from his collaboration with a homeowner; interpreting shelter as “feeling at home in one’s skin” with both its protection and restrictions.
Exhibition runs through December 31

Going to Extremes - Friday, November 6
7-8:30 pm
Presentation
In advance: $12 (First Person Arts members) / $15 (general public) - $15/$20 after 10/25
Less than 11 months after setting the world record for a solo trek across Antarctica, Todd Carmichael (founder of La Colombe Coffee) will attempt the first man-haul traverse of Death Valley National Park. After he walks 250 miles through the second-driest place on earth — alone and without assistance, re-supplies, supplemental water or the aid of machine or animal — he comes to the First Person Festival to talk about his daring quests. And after the Festival? A trek across the Namib desert. Don’t miss this exciting conversation with one of the most intrepid adventurers in the world today.

Karaoke-Obsessed - Friday, November 6
9-11 pm
Presentation
In advance: $12 (First Person Arts members) / $15 (general public) - $15/$20 after 10/25
When Brian Raftery first stepped up to the microphone, he had no idea it would be a life-altering event. Despite his terrible voice, he kept on singing. Soon he was traveling the world pursuing an infatuation that grew into a full-blown obsession. Brian will share a few highlights from that journey, then turn over the program to karaoke host Sara Sherr. Bring your posse and get ready to sing your favorite song - and remember, since we’re First Person Arts, we’d love to hear a story about the song you choose to sing!

WORKSHOPS - Saturday, November 7
9 am-Noon
In advance: $20 (First Person Arts members) / $25 (general public) - $25/30 after 10/25
Is your life one for the books? How about the stage or screen? Come with an idea for a personal story you’d like to tell, then spend the morning developing it. First we’ll introduce you to three ways to craft it: in writing, orally, or as a digital story. Then you’ll join one of three workshops, each led by a professional in a different discipline. Whether you attended a previous workshop or are just starting out, our leaders: Lisa Nelson Haynes, August Tarrier, and Tina Devine (all back by popular demand) will provide the inspiration and guidance you need to keep at it.

Life/Story - Saturday, November 7
12:30-1:30 pm
Interview, Q&A, book signing

Ben Yagoda knows memoir. He has spent years exploring its history and analyzing its many different forms. A.J. Jacobs writes memoir — hilarious stories about unusual “experiments in living” that he undertakes. Rachel Simon takes on big personal challenges, then writes about what they teach her about life. Laurie Sandell writes and draws her stories. Her first graphic memoir about her difficult upbringing was published this year. Yagoda leads a conversation with the three authors, who will read excerpts from their recent releases, discuss their approaches to writing memoir, and talk about why and how they do what they do.

A.J. Jacobs is the New York Times bestselling author of The Know-It-All and The Year of Living Biblically.

Ben Yagoda has been an editor/writer at New Jersey Monthly and Philadelphia Magazine, movie critic at the Philadelphia Daily News, and has written for Slate and Esquire.

Rachel Simon is best known for her critically acclaimed, bestselling memoir Riding The Bus With My Sister, which was adapted as a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie.

Sadia Shepard, daughter of a Christian/American father and Muslim/Pakistani mother, understood the complexities of a multi-cultural household. What made her melting pot overflow was the discovery that her grandmother had been born Jewish. Compelled to reclaim her roots, she travelled to India to discover the history of the Jews of India, believed to be descendents of the lost tribes of Israel. She brings this journey to life in her memoir The Girl from Foreign and her film In Search of the Bene Israel, which she presents at the festival. Music by the Lenny Seidman Tabla Choir and a buffet by Ekta Indian Restaurant evoke the tastes and sounds of her unusual history.

His violent behavior persisted for years behind bars until he eventually he transformed himself into to a student of philosophy, a reader of books, a self-taught authority on prison law, and became a husband and a father. He is now a writer and activist, devoted to the moral and practical necessity of reforming the American correctional system. Join us for a videotaped reading by Mr. Hartman from his memoir, Mother California, followed by a Q&A, phoned in live from the California State Prison in LA.

David Rudovsky, one of the nation’s leading civil rights and criminal defense attorneys, joins filmmaker Emily Kunstler to discuss her father’s complicated legacy and the legal ethics questions they explore in her provocative new film: William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe.
This program has been approved for two hours of ethics credit for Pennsylvania lawyers. Credits may be available in other jurisdictions as well. Attorneys seeking CLE credit should bring a check in the amount of $25, payable to the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, to the event.

In a staged reading based on his book Sweet Tea, performance artist and author E. Patrick Johnson gives voice to a group that has been politely concealed: gay, black men born, raised, and living in the South. The narratives he brings to life are based on interviews with men of different generations, showing how they navigate “good old” southern customs to legitimate themselves as members of southern and black cultures.

Just the Two of Us. Ain’t No Sunshine. Lean on Me. The man who wrote the songs that defined a decade walked away from showbiz without a look back. For 23 years, Bill Withers shunned the spotlight and refused all interviews — until filmmakers Damani Baker and Alex Vlack convinced him to tell his surprising story. Still Bill gives us an inside look at Bill Withers’ life and personality, tells why he stopped performing at the peak of his career and who he is today. An amazing portrait of an icon who never gave up his soul. The evening concludes with a live concert of Withers’ classics by the legendary Johnny Ingram of the Funk Brothers, and his band.

JIM HENSON ART EXHIBIT “FANTASTIC WORLD”
September 12 through November 29, 2009
Della Penna-Fernberger | Paton | Smith Galleries

“Jim didn’t think in terms of boundaries at all the way the rest of us do. There are always these fences we build around ourselves and our ideas. Jim seemed to have no fences.” —Jon Stone, Sesame Street producer and director Without “fences” to limit where his imagination could roam, Jim Henson (1936-1990)—artist, puppeteer, film director and producer—created elaborate imaginary worlds filled with unique characters, objects, environments and even languages and cultures. Jim Henson’s Fantastic World, an exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) and the Jim Henson Legacy, offers a rare peek into the imagination and creative genius of this multitalented innovator and creator of Kermit the Frog, Big Bird and other beloved characters. Jim Henson’s Fantastic World is the inaugural show in the Della Penna-Fernberger | Paton | Smith Galleries, the new exhibition space that is the center-piece of the Museum’s $12 million expansion. This exhibition features 100 original artworks, including drawings, cartoons and storyboards that illustrate Henson’s talent as a storyteller and visionary. Among the variety of exhibition objects are puppets and television and movie props, photographs of Henson and his collaborators at work and original video productions, including excerpts from Henson’s early career and experimental films. The exhibition installation will include a resource room, which will feature hands-on activities for children of all ages, including a puppet theater.

“It’s such a treat to get to know Jim Henson through his doodles and drawings, his puppets and his fantastic performances,” said Karen Falk, curator of the exhibition and archivist at The Jim Henson Company. “I’m delighted to be able to share this inspiring and entertaining experience with people all over the country. Seeing his original work firsthand opens a window into his visual thinking and provides both an appreciation of Jim as an artist and a reason to laugh out loud.”

From the very beginning, Henson expressed his ideas with incredible bursts of invention, through a variety of visual forms, clever dialogue, songs, comic bits and animation. All of his work reveals a highly sophisticated and nuanced thought process, evident in the decades-long metamorphosis of a small group of captivating characters from simple doodles to cartoons to puppets to films. What began as a one-man enterprise eventually grew into an international phenomenon. As time passed, the simple hand puppets that Henson created for his first television show, “Sam and Friends,” evolved into increasingly more sophisticated characters—from the Muppets of “The Muppet Show,” “Sesame Street” and “Fraggle Rock” fame to the larger-than-life fantasy creatures of “The Dark Crystal” and “Labyrinth”. Jim Henson’s Fantastic World is organized by The Jim Henson Legacy and SITES, in cooperation with the Henson Family; The Jim Henson Company; The Muppets Studio, LLC; and Sesame Workshop. The exhibition is made possible by The Biography Channel. Additional support has been provided The Jane Henson Foundation and Cheryl Henson.
The Biography Channel is a 24-hour digital cable network dedicated to presenting compelling stories about the world’s most interesting people. One of the most sought after and fastest growing channels available today, The Biography Channel presents vibrant profiles of intriguing individuals, plus exciting new original series, short features and documentaries.

Established in 1992, The Jim Henson Legacy was founded by Jane Henson, colleagues and friends in response to the extraordinary interest in the life and prolific body of work by Jim Henson. The non-profit 501(C3) organization is dedicated to preserving and perpetuating Jim Henson’s contributions to the worlds of puppetry, television and motion pictures, special effects and media technology. By making Jim Henson’s creative work available to the public through presentations and exhibits, the Legacy’s mission is to share the power of his art, his imagination and his positive view of life with generations to come.

SITES has been sharing the wealth of Smithsonian collections and research programs with millions of people outside Washington, D.C., for more than 50 years. SITES connects Americans to their shared cultural heritage through a wide range of exhibitions about art, science and history, which are shown wherever people live, work and play.

DEATH PANEL

Punk / Folk / Pop

Northern Liberties Variety Show, 11/11/07 Johnny Brendas,Philadelphia

Charles Latham wields an acid tongue and a poison pen, crafting social criticism and brutal self-analysis into three and a half minute ramshackle pop songs. His songs are often exercises in duality: he finds humor in horror and horror in humor, the profane in beauty and beauty in the profane. In a live performance, his audience often laughs and smiles, but he rarely does. His lofi home recordings compliment the harsh honesty of his lyrics; his guitar buzzes and rings, and his snarling voice leaps, cracks and cries. Originally from Washington, DC, Charles Latham began playing music professionally while living in Brighton, England as a student. The UK’s folk/punk or “antifolk” scene adopted him as one of their own: Latham was the only non British act to perform at the 2004 Winter Antifolk Fest in London. It wasnt long until he was playing frequent gigs in Brighton and London. In 2005, Latham was voted “Best of Sussex” by a panel of judges at the Sussex Battle of the Bands, winning the grand prize. After returning to the States, Charles Latham completed his first full length album, “Pretty Mouth” in the spring of 2006; the album is a collection of home recordings captured on an 8 track in various locations in the UK and at his home near DC. The album was self released, and has been met with enthusiastic acclaim in both the US and UK. Several songs from the album, including “Memorabilia” and “My Perfect Church”, have received frequent airplay on college radio; “Nice (to me)” is currently a featured song on NPR. “Boot Hill” is listed as one of the top “Songs of the Times” on Neil Young’s Living With War site. A non album track, “The Internet Sexual Predator Talking Blues”, a song about the scandal surrounding (ex) Congressman Mark Foley, was given 3.5 out of 5 stars by Pitchfork. Since releasing “Pretty Mouth”, Latham has played frequent shows in the US, including many shows in the Raleigh/Durham area of NC, where he lived from 2005 to 2007. In late 2006, Latham created Antifolk SouthEast, a loose collective of folk/punk musicians in the Raleigh/Durham area, and coproduced the Antifolk SouthEast Winter Extravaganza 2007, a showcase of musicians in the collective, and the first festival of its kind in the area. The event was sold out. Latham has been a featured performer in the Fortified Antifolk Festivals in New York City since 2007. Recently, Latham relocated to Philadelphia, PA. Before leaving North Carolina, he released a limited edition LP, “Beltline”. “Legend: The Best of Charles Latham”, a collection of songs from his various releases, is currently available as a digital album through iTunes worldwide. Latham continues to write, record and perform.

@chaplins

Missionaries are murderers. All social reformers are dangerous. And people who are seeking service can be very, very violent, aggressive. They are. If you are in the grip of a good man, it is difficult to escape. You are imprisoned. And he is doing everything for your sake. And whatsoever he is doing, he is trying to find a way through you to his own heaven. You are just the eans. And this is the most immoral act in the world, to treat a man as a means. I call it the most immoral act, the greatest sin, to treat a man as a means. Every man is an end in himself!”

STRAND OF OAKS

Folk/ Indie

???

Strand of Oaks is Timothy Showalter, an Indiana Mennonite turned Pennsylvania Hebrew Dayschool teacher who even drives the school bus for extra cash (and has sing-alongs with the pupils as they ease on down the road). It’s like a scene from “Behind the Music” if the weed-soaked Tom Petty was your busdriver, and in this case the metaphors, spread throughout nine tracks, are to be taken quite literally. Leave Ruin is Strand of Oaks’ hometown deathbed-confession hymnal, the soundtrack of an Exodus. It’s been back roads and parenthetical side streets for Showalter since he left his ruin of small town America. As a Hoosier transplant, he landed in the fertile musical soil of Northeastern Pennsylvania with a few key twists of fate that would turn his tragedy into trajectory. While escaping a relationship gone worse, Showalter returned home to a house burned down, leaving all of his earthly possessions charred in flames. Spending nights in downtown hotels and on park benches with a borrowed guitar, he began to face the proverbial demons. Like any good roller coaster ride there came an upside, as inspiration grew like weeds within the rubble; songs led to shows, which led to tours of the US and UK with Jason Anderson and Kimya Dawson. Leave Ruin took shape shortly thereafter while touring and collaborating with Lou Rogai (Lewis & Clarke). Taking cues from such luminaries as Neil Young (On the Beach era) and a burgeoning Springsteen, Showalter extends his musical gesture and searches to find modesty in the midst of confusion, addressing insecurities and settling existential debt with a simple and beautiful delivery. The personification of a Midwestern Grandfather’s advice, his songs smack with hard truth and poignant severity, from child-like naivete to heart worn wisdom… sparse guitar, hammond, rhodes and wooden instruments support an atmosphere that is tender and raw, at times uncomfortable, shockingly candid, and unforgettable.

THE ROOM (New Cult Classic considered one of the best worst films ever)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCj8sPCWfUw

The Room is a 2003 independent film written and directed by its star, Tommy Wiseau, who is also credited on screen as both the movie’s producer and executive producer. The principal cast includes Wiseau, Juliette Danielle, Greg Sestero, Philip Haldiman, Carolyn Minnott, and Robyn Paris. The Room tells the melodramatic story of a love triangle between a man, his future wife, and his best friend. Without any studio support, Wiseau spent over $7 million on production and marketing for the film. Wiseau promotes the film as a black comedy and insists that its humor is actually intentional, although cast members have publicly disputed these claims[1] and many audience members generally view the film as a poorly-made drama.[2][3] The Room has been cited by some critics as one of the worst films ever made,[4][5] and has been called “the Citizen Kane of bad movies.”[6][7] After a brief run in Los Angeles, the film went on to develop a cult following and continues to have midnight screenings around the United States and the United Kingdom.
The Room is the story of a love triangle between a kind-hearted man named Johnny (Wiseau), his fiancée Lisa (Danielle), and his best friend Mark (Sestero). At the beginning of the film, Lisa has become dissatisfied with Johnny, confiding to her best friend Michelle (Paris) and her mother Claudette (Minnott) that she finds him boring. Lisa seduces Mark, and they begin an affair that continues throughout the film, even as Mark more than once tries to break it off. Lisa stays with Johnny because he is a successful banker who has promised to buy her a house. As the wedding date approaches and Johnny’s clout at his bank slips, Lisa gets closer to leaving Johnny for Mark. The film has several subplots involving secondary characters. A neighboring college student named Denny (Haldiman) — whom Johnny supports and loves like a son — has a mysterious run-in with a drug dealer and struggles with his attraction to Lisa; Claudette, Lisa’s mother, deals with real estate problems, failed relationships, and breast cancer (although she nonchalantly announces she has this condition near the beginning of the film, it’s never mentioned again); Michelle’s boyfriend Mike (Mike Holmes) is shamed by Lisa and Claudette walking in on him with Michelle in Johnny and Lisa’s living room. All of these subplots are introduced and quickly forgotten. When Lisa throws Johnny a surprise birthday party, she flaunts her affair in front of Johnny, and Johnny and Mark get into not one but two altercations. Johnny has also attached a tape recorder to the telephone, recording an intimate call between his fiancée and Mark. Claiming that he doesn’t have a friend in the world, Johnny locks himself in his bathroom until everyone has left. When he comes out, he destroys his apartment, finds the handgun he took from Denny’s drug dealer Chris-R, and commits suicide with a gunshot to the head. Lisa and Mark discover Johnny’s corpse soon afterwards, and Denny is not far behind. Mark blames Johnny’s death on Lisa. Denny blames Johnny’s death on Lisa and Mark, urging them to leave him alone with the corpse so he can say farewell, but as the film closes, Lisa and Mark remain with Denny as police sirens grow louder.
